Important Thoughts 27.0

27.1: I often hear other parents talk about how their children are "showing more personality" as they get older; for Max, this translates into "emphatically showing likes and dislikes that make no sense to anyone else." For example, Max likes: graham crackers, cords, piggyback rides, dumping out all the blocks, throwing foods we know he likes {grapes! What's wrong with grapes??} on the floor without even trying them, and dropping anything he can find in the fireplace {tonight I found a hair elastic, a plastic cup, a block, a grape stem, and one of the remotes in there}.

Max does NOT like: Daddy leaving for work in the morning, anyone ever opening a door to the outside without letting Max outside also, anyone ever going upstairs without letting Max upstairs also, not getting picked up when Mama's in the kitchen, not getting to eat whatever you're eating, not getting to play with whatever Maggie has, being given a sippy cup of an inferior color to the one that Maggie has been given {apparently he has determined a hierarchy of cup/lid color combinations and he'll refuse to drink until you give him the best available one}, and having anything taken away that he's not ready to give up yet {usually non-toy items he's found on the floor/ground and decided are his own; today it was a collection of sticks from the deck}. Do anything Max doesn't like and he'll either crawl after you sobbing or scream so loud it will cut you.

27.2: It's one of those weird truths of newborn babyhood, but there are only two times when Lucy has a blowout - within the first three minutes after I change her clothes, or never. Seriously, if an outfit makes it past those first three minutes, I could leave it on her for a week and it would stay clean. Guaranteed.

27.3: I've been re-watching the first three seasons of Grey's Anatomy {the only seasons I watched live, and in my opinion, the only seasons worth watching}, and I'm reminded of a few things. I'm reminded that I sometimes love cloudy, drizzly, perpetually depressing weather. I'm reminded that I love this soundtrack and I still have all the words to every song memorized. And finally, I'm reminded that I used to be really embarrassed by the word "penis." Like, really really embarrassed.

27.4: Can I set the record straight? I don't think Maggie and Lucy very much alike at all. AT ALL. I think they have the same eyes, and I think maybe they might have the same mouth, but with such different noses and head shapes and coloring, they turn out looking about as alike as Maggie and Max {which is to say, not very alike}. They're more like opposite babies. Check this picture out.

27.5: I find myself with this strange amount of free time where I don't have enough to get anything done, like clean my house or make dinner or get dressed or blog, but I do have enough to keep up with what's going on in everyone else's life via the social media. {I do blogs, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook, but not Pinterest. Pinterest and I have kind of been taking a break lately, mostly because I go there and I look at everything and think, "But who even cares?" and then I find something else to do.} It's easy because I have my phone next to me almost always, so while I'm nursing or eating lunch or just while Max and Maggie are occupied doing something other than climbing on me, I can tap tap tap and be entertained.

And it's weird, because I've found myself checking my phone more and more often, hoping for some new e-mail or Instagram notification or Twitter mention to pop up. And why can't I go half an hour without glancing at my phone? It kind of grosses me out. On the one hand, I feel a little guilty that I'm even looking for a distraction while I'm nursing Lucy, because shouldn't we be bonding and stuff? But on the other, what am I supposed to do, just stare at her? {And really, that's not a rhetorical question - what am I supposed to do while breastfeeding?? I don't know. The lactation consultants didn't teach me in the hospital.} It's something I need to work on, this phone-dependence.

27.6: What kind of eggs are your favorite? And can you make them yourself? I've been cooking two over easy eggs for breakfast each morning, because I love dipping the runny yolk in buttered toast.

  1. Now that we follow each other on twitter, I'll be happy to give you some fodder for your breastfeeding hours.

I left my phone at home yesterday while I was bustling about the city. I realized it just as I stepped onto the subway. You'd have thought I left the house without clothes on. I felt naked for the next 4 hours. It was, however, nice to realize I could navigate, and better still, not completely perish without my phone.

I was always a scrambled eggs with cheese kind of girl, but I am branching out. Over easy has become my new fave. While I cannot make them, my husband can. I really like that about him.

    1. I'm loving your tweets already. :)

Scrambled eggs with cheese are delicious. I love mine with sharp cheddar.

  2. Does Max have red hair??? Or is that camera angle? I love when red hair randomly shows up!

I love grey's. I ADORE the soundtrack. I love it when I'm having a bad day, sad day, whatev, for some reason the depressing vibe makes me feel better.

Ahhh social media and breastfeeding. I went through the same thing. Zoey was the slowest eater known to man, so I felt like I had at least 6 hours a day just sitting nursing--to say it's mindnumbing. I always had lofty goals of scripture study or reading books (both of which I would do sometimes)... but generally I was tired and facebook takes almost no thought/energy so I would check it ridiculous amounts a day.

My only advice, if you want to be productive while nursing, I find it's easier to set in your mind when you're going to do stuff, i.e. her early morning feeding I'm gonna read the ensign and her after lunch feeding I'm going to email family. Then you can't say next time, and you don't feel as bad about the rest.

Or I've found that it goes away as the nursings whittle down to no time and then you don't need to worry about it.

I like my eggs fried on an english muffin or bagel with cheese, spinach and a slice of tomato... yum. (Sorry for the novel)

    1. Um, I love super long comments. {You know I read yours while nursing.} Max doesn't have red hair, but Maggie does, and it kind of came out of nowhere. I love it! Yes, the depressing vibe of Grey's is something that makes me like it more. Lucy is a pretty slow eater, too; thanks for the ideas on getting stuff done! They're good, and I should definitely put them into practice. Your eggs sound! And much healthier than mine.

  3. One thing I learned from my brother's kids and hopefully I'll be able to work out is to have the same color of as many eating implements as possible. Their world is so tiny and having the inappropriate color of anything somehow completely rocks that little world. So it's for sure not just Max.

I started rewatching Greys from the beginning as well recently. I had to stop or skip over some things because it was way too much human emotion for my pregnant self. I had to move on to Raising Hope- only funny human emotions.

Jericho and my favorite eggs are hole in the wall, or pop-eyes to some people. But I don't eat them when I'm pregnant b/c I'm supposed to only have fully cooked ones or something and the runny yolks only seem to gross me out when I'm pregnant. I eat scrambled instead with cheese and broken up pieces of turkey bacon. And you cook the bacon in the same pan first so the eggs get a yummy flavor.

    1. Darn those cheap packs of rainbow-colored sippy cups from Target! They've caused us so much drama.

I've ugly cried by myself in the middle of the night while watching Grey's a few times... it's ridiculous. The ones that get me the most are storylines about babies being born, babies being born early, and babies with medical problems. I don't think it takes a genius to understand why.

You're lucky runny yolks are unappetizing when you're pregnant; I craved them so much with Lucy and it was a continual frustration that I wasn't allowed to eat them.

  4. Eggs on an English muffin, scrambled or cooked through when you do the over easy (I somehow can't think of the right name).

I started watching Dawson's Creek from the beginning. Probably because Holmes/Cruise are all over the news. It's ridiculous. And awesome. But not quite ridiculously awesome.

    1. I just finished Dawson's Creek a few weeks ago! {Did we talk about this already?} You're totally right -- it is both ridiculous and awesome. I was thoroughly entertained, and cried like a baby during the finale. If you ever want to commiserate or discuss, feel free!

  5. I have been feeling the same way about my phone dependence, and always checking to see if I have a new update. It's a problem, I've determined! Can't stop, but at least I'm willing to admit it. I did the first couple of Grey's seasons last summer while my kids slept during the day or while I nursed. I also listened to Atlas Shrugged again on my ipod while I nursed.
I'm with you, eggs over easy w/ the butter toast! If Matt is cooking & has time, I LOVE eggs benedict! That sauce is so good! We do sauteed spinach instead of canadian bacon so I guess it's eggs Florentine! whatever. it's good.

    1. Wow, you guys eat fancy eggs. I've never tried Eggs Benedict or Florentine. If we are ever lucky enough to have Matt cook us breakfast again, I'll make a special request. :)

  6. I am totally addicted to my phone as well. I carry it with me all the time and if I go to nurse Tate to sleep without it, I feel like I am being held hostage by boredom. I have been trying to read while I nurse instead and find it helps me feel marginally less dependent on my phone. And I can really tell how much I am nursing by how fast I cruise through my "nursing books".

I watched Grey's Anatomy over the winter. I intended to sort of just watch the first 3 or 4 seasons again, but I got so sucked in I watched everything. It gets so soapy and dumb, but I couldn't help myself. And the music from Grey's is really something. I love it!

    1. I should definitely try reading; I feel stupid for not thinking of it earlier. I might have to try the rest of the seasons, just for their entertainment value.

So I've been a little nervous to tell you, but I tried My So-Called Life... I couldn't get past the first few episodes! What does this mean about our friendship??

  7. I LOVE that 1st Grey's soundtrack. I was thinking the other day about how I don't even remember what happened in the beginning....and then I remembered Izzy and how glad I am that she's gone!

  8. i read three of four of the longest charles dickens novels when i nursed laura (nicholas nickleby!). i wasn't type a and made a goal or a schedule or anything (who do you think i am?), i just looked around and picked up a book and said, hmmm. charles dickens. haven't had time to read that one yet. old curiosity shop. tried pickwick papers two or three times, but couldn't get interested.

by the way, i'm interested in how many of your friends are watching old series. i thought dad and i were the only ones who couldn't find anything new worth watching on tv. we go on to season two of 24 when i get back from utah.
