Lucy's Birth Story, Vlogged

I know I never posted anything about Max and Maggie's birth story -- it was such a crazy experience, so exciting and scary and mind-blowing and painful and wonderful and heart-breaking that I could never really get it out in a way that satisfied me. I still may write about it, some day, when it's farther away and easier to think about. But Lucy's story is so perfectly amazing and happy, I'd love to share it with you.

I realized a few days ago that I'd never have the time to write Lucy's birth story {again, in a way that satisfied me}, so I decided to vlog it. And because I'm incredibly self-conscious, I feel the need to say that it's unrehearsed and therefore pretty awkward. I also feel the need to add these notes:

It's almost fifteen minutes long. I stumble over my words and repeat myself constantly. My hair wasn't actually as tall as it looks. The first time I mention the date, I say that it was June 19th -- it wasn't. It was May 19th, der. I don't know what I'm doing with my hands at any point. There's one part when I tuck my hair behind my ear, decide I don't like how it looks, and pull it back out. Watch for that. I get emotional near the end and my nose gets runny and it's gross.

I almost scrapped the whole thing and started over, but when I watched it back, despite all the aspects that jumped out at me as being weird, it also felt more honest that way, like this is the way I would tell you if we were face-to-face. And I like that about it. So... enjoy!

And, because I forgot and then couldn't figure out how to put them together in the same video:

  1. First, I love that picture! It is awesome! Second, great story! I'm so glad it went just how you wanted. Third, I love the name Lucy and if we have any more kids, it's been on our list since before you had your Lucy so we still might use it! :) And lastly, that little squeak Lucy gives off at the end is precious! I miss the newborn sounds. They are so beautiful when they're so little and new! COngrats again Mary!!

  2. I basically second everything that Marisha said ;) Loved Lucy's little squeak. You actually don't look or sound as awkward as you think you do. I seriously hope my second birth goes as quick as yours did. And I didn't get to hold Charlie on my chest (nor did Trevor get to cut the cord) and those are two things I really really want for my next baby. So excited for you! Congrats :)

  4. I don't normally read people's birth stories in their entirety b/c they are soooooo long and detailed but having it in video form was way more enjoyable.
I love the STD questions. I love that when you're pregnant they make you get tested TWICE for STDs. I know it's the law but really, it's kind of mean b/c the second test is saying, "I know you were negative the first time but we have to test you again in case you or your husband had a dirty, unprotected affair in the last few months."

  6. I couldn't sleep so I got my iPad out to catch up on Facebook and twitter and saw that you posted Lucy's birth story. I cried my little eyes out here at 2 in the morning. I LOVE that you made a video. It is so personal and natural, just as if I were sitting there with you in your living room. It's such a sweet story and I am so pleased all our prayers were answered for Lucy's timely and safe arrival. You are amazing, Mary, and I love you very much.

  7. Dear Mary,
I found your blog through the ever delightful Elizabeth of E Tells Tales. I just watched the story of Lucy's birth and cried right along with you. I love the details you recalled like the mantras in your head as you walked and calling Christian from upstairs and Mick Jagger on SNL. What a beautiful story, a beautiful Lucy.
Pleasure to meet you and yours, Mary.
    Warmly,
    molly
